In honour of Mother’s day which is right around the corner, this is an opportunity to also be mindful of new mothers whose journeys as parents may be marked with silent suffering. Approximately 10-15% of women are said to experience what is known as Postpartum Depression (PPD). The vital discussions surrounding the topic of PPD have only recently been brought to light, despite how many women suffer from depressive symptoms after they give birth each year. Women may be reluctant to seek the help they need for various reasons such as a lack of support, or a fear of experiencing shame and stigma. The Canadian Mental Health Association has outlined an informative overview of what PPD is, and how it can be treated.
