Dr. Sylvia Kemenoff-Vitiello is a registered Clinical and School Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario, authorized to practice with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. When working with clients, she applies a variety of systemic family therapy models, as well as a combination of psychodynamic, narrative, and dialectical therapy approaches, adapted to meet each client’s unique presentation and pathway to change.
After receiving her B.Sc. at the University of Toronto, Dr. Kemenoff-Vitiello completed her Ph.D., at Texas A&M University where she pursued clinical training with youth presenting with complex mental health and learning needs. During her graduate training, Dr. Kemenoff-Vitiello developed a sincere passion for working with families, which led her to New York State to complete an internship providing specialized training in family therapy as well as interventions for youth presenting with significant mental health challenges and/or traumatic experiences.
Since obtaining her Ph.D., Dr. Kemenoff-Vitiello has practiced as a licensed psychologist for over 25 years, first in the state of New York and then in Ontario, providing psychological assessment and psychotherapy services to youth and families in inpatient, residential, outpatient/community mental health, and school settings. For the past 15 years, Dr. Kemenoff-Vitiello has been the Director of Psychological Services at Youthdale Treatment Centres in Toronto, providing direct services to clients, teaching a 6 month family therapy seminar and supervising clinical trainees in psychological assessment as well as in individual and family therapy (respectively through the Psychiatry Department and OISE at the University of Toronto), in addition to carrying out administrative and consultation responsibilities, while also maintaining a small private practice. During seven of those years, she was also the Clinical Coordinator for a trans-disciplinary team that provided consultation and assessment services to York Region mental health and child welfare professionals working with high needs clients.
Dr. Kemenoff-Vitiello has worked with youth (and their families) presenting with a variety of mental health disorders (e.g. mood and anxiety disorders, Conduct Disorder, PTSD/complex trauma, ADHD, OCD, Tourette’s Syndrome, psychosis, and emerging personality disorders), associated learning needs (e.g. Learning Disabilities, underachievement, school avoidance), and emotional-behavioural struggles (e.g. self-harm, suicidality, rage outbursts, peer difficulties, social withdrawal). She has also worked with individuals, couples, and families seeking to address more relational or life challenges (such as changes in family structure, developmental crises, familial/couple relational conflicts) interfering with their sought-after quality of life. Her many years of experience working collaboratively with clients has strengthened her belief in the resilience of the human spirit, the healing power of interpersonal relationships, as well as the uniqueness of the needs and strengths of each individual, couple, and family who have sought her support.
